Season 2

SPRING: AN EDIBLE FLOWERS FABLE

Enhancing the spirit of springtime with a farmers’ market find: rose petals and squash blossoms

Part 2 of 4

photo3 During a springtime trip to our local farmers’ market, we learned that flowers—edible flowers, that is—can be part of a palate-pleasing feast. Early one morning while we were selecting some fresh organic salad greens, our eyes lit on two colorful bins: one filled with rose petals, the other with dainty yellow squash blossoms. Fascinated by the idea of being able to consume—literally—these universal manifestations of springtime, we bought a bagful of each.

Rose-Petal Sorbet

ophoto2Feeling joyful and excited by our “flower findings,” we considered making some rose-petal jam, then instantly turned our attention, instead, to enhancing and ingesting the spirit of springtime by using pretty, fragrant rose petals as a garnish for some raspberry sorbet (our favorite). Though we knew the petals were pesticide free, we still washed them gently in a bowl of warm water. We then shook some dry, while we used the moisture on the remaining rose petals to attract and hold the confectioners’ sugar in which we dipped them.

Squash-Blossom Bounty

Squash Blossom BountyThroughout the week, we continued to celebrate spring each time we savored the subtle flavors inherent in the golden yellow squash blooms that we had mixed into the farm-fresh greens, or the red rose petals that lingered—ever so delicately—near the raspberry sorbet. With each spoonful of sorbet or forkful of squash blossom-flavored salad, our hearts smiled at the promise of new life and the bloom of new beginnings that spring brings. And we reflected on the gentle, delicate petals and the feelings and thoughts that often bloom in spring: a sense of hope and optimism, a tug toward new beginnings, and reflections on birth and rebirth.
